Colour Cards

Do you have - and use - colour cards in your quilting?  They are a great resource to have on hand when choosing colours for a quilt, especially for online shopping.  The cards are available for purchase from most manufacturers for their on-going lines.
I have two colour cards for Mirror Ball Dot.  The first was for the original release of this very popular fabric.
It was updated last year when Michael Miller released new colours, so I had to have that one too!
Fairy Frost is an extensive line with lots of colours;  the card is really more like a book.
It's fun to flip through the pages, and be able to feel the actual swatches of fabric.
I also have colour cards for threads from different manufacturers, which allows me to match thread to fabric without guessing.

The one from Wonderfil flips open like a fan.
Earlier this year, I used Hoffman Watercolour Handpaints in the Stuffle and In The Summertime and having a colour card made the fabric selection much easier.

When this colour card is folded out, it's 85" of gorgeousness.
Sadly, these beautiful displays of colour get folded up and tucked away.  Leave it to Hoffman to come up with a BRILLIANT way to show their entire 1895 Watercolour line.  This digitally printed Watercolor Palette cotton panel contains all 372 colours.

It is so pretty on its own that all I added was a bit of quilting to make a wallhanging for my sewing room.  I bordered and bound it with some of my favourite watercolours.

I simply stitched straight lines around each colour, and then added some squiggly lines vertically between each section to make the little pillows pop out.
It's fun to read the colour names, and ponder the thought behind each.  There are visual representations for April, Thanksgiving, Breeze, London...and Peter!
On the Hoffman website, you can find this pattern for a quilt made using the panel by  Linda Fitch; it's beyond clever. The panels are available from Mrs. Pugsley's Emporium, and I understand are selling quickly.
This is one colour card that won't get folded up and tucked out of sight.

Pinterest Interest

Some time ago I designed and released this pattern for a sweet nursery set. I named it "Yan Tan Tethera" after an olde English sheep counting rhyme used to lull little ones to sleep (from where we get our "counting sheep").
It's always been a good seller but lately, through Pinterest, there has been a resurgence in interest and the quilt is pinned on a great many boards.  Due to popular demand, I have reformatted the instructions and they are now available for instant download on Craftsy.  The set is pieced using Michael Miller Fairy Frost and Mirror Ball Dot;  it was my first introduction to these fabrics and to the talent of Mark Hordyszynski, their designer.  It was especially fun to use the Glow In The Dark cotton for the sheep;  it really works!  When the lights go out, the sheep remain visible in the dark.  This fabric isn't always easy to find, but it is available and in stock at Mrs Pugsley's Emporium.  Mrs. P.'s does mail order; an email will get you the details!

Manna From Hawaii

Wow.  Mark Hordyszynski had hinted on his blog that he was sending a small thank you gift to each of the participants in the Mirror Ball Dot Blog Hop.  The gift arrived early this morning, and it was like Christmas morning opening the box.
Mark sent an amazing and fun array of items:  Fusi-Boo fusible batting by Fairfield (which I've never tried before), an editor's copy of SHAG (Mark's novel - and if you check out his blog right away you can enter to win a copy for yourself), Mark's book Strip and Knit With Style, sample packs of thread from Sulky as well a book of projects using their Blendables thread, and Hawaiian macadamia nut chocolates (yum!).
Mark had concerns that the chocolate would not travel well, but it was fine;  the only casualty was this culinary sea salt which opened and spilled throughout the box.  Luckily there was enough left in the package for us to sample.
This adorable tiny origami shirt made by his friend Penny using Mirror Ball Dot fabric is an awesome keepsake.  I love it!
Mark wrote a wonderful letter, which was in this envelope made from Fairy Frost, another of his fabrics.
Again, it was such a treat to be included in this blog hop.  Mark you certainly made it special.  Me ka `oia`i`o; Mahalo.

Stopping Hopping

The Mirror Ball Dot Blog Hop is officially over.  I'd like to thank all who participated, and for the wonderful comments you left on each artist's blog.  I don't often get many comments here...which is always a bit of a puzzle as my stats counter logs an amazing number of visitors each month and I get tons of email.  I guess most of you are too shy to post "out loud" :)  It pleases me greatly to see that 3 of the winners are Canadian, two of them from right here in Nova Scotia.  Mark has written his wrap-up post here and I do hope you will take a moment to read it and leave a comment for Mark who put a great deal of effort into making this happen.

Something fishy here...

We’ve been waiting with baited breath for the final designer stop on the Mirror Ball Dot blog hop; this week it is Nanette Zeller from North Carolina.  Nanette decided to make a 3-D object for her project and by cod, there's no need to be koi about it or skate around saying it: she did a great job. I’m hooked!  While you are on Nanette’s site,  just for the halibut make sure you take the op-perch-tuna-ty to check out her gallery.  I especially like “Oil Cans.” Her work embodies a lot of sole.

Personally, I’ve been having a whale of a time checking out all the Mirror Ball Dot projects these past few weeks; the projects have been so varied and creative, no floundering around and nothing to carp about.  If you have time salmon chanted evening, check out the complete list of participants:

We're Up!

We've been waiting patiently to join the Mirror Ball Dot Blog Hop, and now it's our turn! (and by "we", of course I mean Polly and I).  When Mark invited us to participate in this adventure, it sounded like a lot of fun...and it has been. For me this was an opportunity to play with fabric, no strings attached. I wrote a bit about the hop and showed my palette on a previous post:
I need to begin with a confession...I didn't exactly stick to the rules and use just the colours sent;  I couldn't resist dipping into all those luscious shades in my stash.  As I poured through the fabric, I pondered what I wanted the fabric to say.  I thought about the name of the line, and wondered if anyone had ever done the obvious: a disco ball.  A Google search did not turn up any results so away we went on our first project...

Circle Circle Dot Dot
I decided to make a sphere.  I've never made one before.  I spent a lot of time figuring how to draw the lines and as always, it's simplify, simplify, simplify.  After a couple of false starts, it finally boiled down to 4 shapes, repeated and reversed.  By the time I had figured this out of course, I had used most of my onyx MBD, which means this rough copy is also my finished piece.
I backed the fabric pieces with Wonder-Under, and fused them in place.

In a do-over world, I would have redone some of the colour placements and smoothed out the stitching lines of the meridians a bit better.  But you get the idea;  it was fun and I will definitely make another.

Adding a second layer of wool batting to pop out the centre of the sphere gave birth to another idea:  I should make something 3-D: an actual Mirror Ball! I started by tracing a 4" circle onto cardboard.
I divided the circle into 6 equal parts and drew lines to connect three of them to make an equilateral triangle.

I cut this out with scissors.
Heavy weight interfacing was fused to the back of the fabric and I traced  20, 4" circles using that red can cover shown above.
I pressed the fabric over the triangle template to make a crease to follow when sewing.
I laid them out in a line as shown and stitched them together along the creased line.I joined the last triangle to the first to make a loop
For the top and bottom I made a little hat of 5 more sections and stitched them in place.
A length of sequined trim to catch the light and give a little sparkle was added for the hanging loop.
I could have stitched along the outside curves to hold them together, but I didn't; I took the easy way and added a drop of hot glue.  Simple, and fun! Picture yourself on the dance floor with a little night fever.

Circle Circle Square Square
Polly felt there was one last thing to be made from our leftover pieces, so we stitched 3" squares...
...added an attic windows mitred border with the Cotton Couture...
...and quilted a simple circle in the centre of each square and a piano key border. Using wool batting makes the circles pop.

And that's what we did with our Mirror Ball Dot.  Mark has scored some prizes for this blog hop.  The first is for everyone, from Fairfield Processing.  Use the promo code in the coupon below for 20% off your online order:
