How To Inset A Circle

How to Inset a Circle

Our sample shows a round Mariner’s Compass being inset into a circle of flying geese, but these instructions are the same for any circle being inset into another circle, pieced or plain.

To begin, divide the centre circle (i.e., the compass) into quarters and mark each with a pin.  These are marked in the pictures below with an X to make them easier to see.

Similarly, divide the pieced circle border into quarters and mark each with a pin. (shown with an X)

Lay the border ring on top of the inner circle (compass) roughly in the position it will be when finished.  This helps you line up the edges to be joined. Remember that the inside edge of the border ring will be sewn to the outside of the centre circle.

Flip the inner edge of the geese border ring down on top of the compass so that the right sides of the fabric are facing each other.  Match up the pins on the compass circle with the pins on the geese ring border and pin.  Make sure it is the inner edge of the geese ring you are joining to the outer edge of the circle. Pin completely around the circle.  It should fit easily with no stretching or bagging.  Stitch all the way around, then flip the border ring back to the right side.

Press seam allowance towards the centre (away from the ring).

 Voila!
